Born and raised in the rural community of Wynnewood, OK with two younger
brothers, Ron began his work life as a carpenter after training at
Central Area Vo-Tech in Wayne, OK and State Technical Institute in Amarillo, TX. He then started his own construction company and so
understands and identifies with working families and small business
owners at the grass-roots level.
Further pursuing his education at OSU-Okmulgee, OK, Ron earned an
associates degree in drafting and design. He then went on to Cameron
University in Lawton, OK while still working a full time job at
Halliburton Services, Duncan. There he designed high pressure pump
trucks for the oil industry. In this capacity, he was able to learn
about the challenges and pressures facing professionals and large
businesses.
With a final move to Stillwater, OK (Payne County), in 1982 to pursue
his BSME (bachelor of science in mechanical engineering) and eventually
earning his MSME (master of science in mechanical engineering), Ron also
became familiar with the needs of the academic community. He currently
holds a position as a Sr. Research Engineer at OSU and owns a small
design and manufacturing company that provides testing equipment.
Another facet that has shaped Ron's concern for the prosperity and
growth of the people and industry in his adopted county is the birth of
his two sons, Luke in 1989 and Matthew in 1999.
He believes that a
quality family life is imperative to the healthy development of the
community. He also credits his family's decade-long 15 year attendance at and
work in at Bible Baptist Church as a major contributing factor to making
him a well-rounded individual and perfect for the job of State Representative.
Mr. Markum is also a great teacher. Below is a link to a web page about
Thunderstorm Robotics. This a group of students that came to Mr.
Markum's house to learn about engineering and manufacturing. This year
was there first year in robotics competition. They built a robot and
placed 31st out of 54 teams at the Houston regionals
